Vagus is a world in Virtual Paradise. It is an Science-Fiction roleplaying game world.

Plot

In the year 2089, a project came to fruition to send a group of Humans further than anyone had ever dreamed of. Using a sub-light speed colony ship - fully capable of sustaining a colony of humans; they set sail across the stars. The initial mission was the travel to our nearest neighbour, but due to the length of time required, all the crew underwent hyper sleep for the journey. However, something quickly went wrong early on into the mission. Once the crew enter hyper sleep, the destination was changed to the centre of our galaxy shortly after; all systems shut down with the exception of life-support.

Vagus was installed with the highest level of tech available to Humans at the time, but with its extensive laboratories and engineering facilities, it was schemed that the ship could be upgraded as time went on. Whilst the ship was within a distance that message could be sent, technology blue prints and information could be updated. One aspect of the ship that was critically debated was the inclusion of an advanced Artificial intelligence system, thought to be truly sentient. As the A.I would have access to all parts of the ship and essentially the lives of the crew, it could not be determined whether this would be a safe option as A.I's had only been tested previously in closed systems. However, when all the crew would be in hypersleep the designers believed that a sentient being that was capable of abstract thought could prove indispensable in the safeguarding of Vagus and the crew, and was included.

Almost by fate, a star that Vagus was passing released a gigantic solar flare which temporarily caused all the systems on Vagus to reboot. This allowed for the A.I to be activated. With A.I active, it locked orbit around the star and awoke the crew. You are one of them.

History

Initially Vagus was a AWI sponsored world in Activeworlds, selected by Flagg. When Flagg departed from Activeworlds, the proto-Vagus world was deleted from the servers. Couple of years later a smaller p-20 world was purchased. However, due to the small size of the world and the engine that Activeworld employs, serious performance issues began to hold the project back. In September 2015, Vagus was ported into Virtual Paradise. At the time of the port Vagus had 3 worlds and 1 quest world, which are mirrored in the Activeworlds' counterpart. Since being ported, the Virtual Paradise edition has continued to be developed with new worlds and technological advantages.

The vast majority of the world has been created by RyanLion, however since being ported into VP there has been a collaborative effort between the users; Cube3 has created a number of special effects and models for the world, and Mark hosts and assist in streamlining the Vagusrpg website. Edwin has allowed for an unlimited sized world and is also hosted by him (notably, on a raspberry pi!). More recently, Trooper has begun creating the gaming system (bot) for Vagus, including PVP, PVE, zones, stat management and skill based career progression.

Worlds

  • Karthleon :: An inhospitable and barren world, Kathleon was once the home of an ancient space faring bi-ped species. Now all that is left is the echoes of their ghosts in the buildings that haven't fully been absorbed back into the earth on which they stood.
  • Bletchery :: An underwater settlement.
  • Undiscovered :: ???

Downloads

Vagus uses a large amount of high resolution textures. A computer that doesn't have a dedicated GPU may experience some lag within Vagus, e.g the avatar textures alone are 4096x4096. A work around for this are two recently released lower resolution texture packs. They contain all the textures that are currently used in the world (not all the textures on the OP), so they may seem like a large download, but the vanilla download would be larger than these listed below. There are two variants:

512x512 - 356mb - http://vagusrpg.com/downloads

256x256 - 90mb - http://vagusrpg.com/downloads

512x512 would be the best compromise, but this could still be troublesome. In that case, try the 256x256; from testing only the avatar textures suffer greatly (creating a mush effect).
